BLESSING OF THE JOHN DEERES

Once a year, in a quiet corner of the sleepy hamlet of Olney, Maryland, a joyous and time honored tradition takes place, known to the privileged few as “The Blessing of the John Deeres.” Young and old delight to the magnificent roar of these powerful icons of suburban supremacy, the manifest destiny of existential lawn care made flesh as riders parade, race and joust- hoping to win the coveted “Silver Ring of the Almighty Buck” and take their place in the annals of mowering fame, winning a kiss from one of the beautiful virgin flower girls. The traditional Wiccan Blessing opens the yearly festivities and the day is closed with the burning of Mr. PEPCO in effigy, in honor of the many dark, frigid winter nights he has bestowed on this gentle little community. After many years, this has remained a closely guarded secret, with just a few of the elite select invited to participate in the secret initiation ceremonies, a ritual veiled in the darkest secrecy. Today, we present a rare window on these celebrations, in the hope of bringing greater enlightenment, peace & understanding to the world. ….and, of course, a more perfectly manicured yard.
