Back in the mid 1960s, Lady Bird Johnson instituted an ambitious program to beautify America, taking aim at the nation’s highways and byways – from Maine to Florida, Delaware to California. One of her chief goals was to remove those nasty signs and neon along the great expanse of American roadside, thus making this great nation a more beautiful place in which to live and travel. Luckily, this undertaking did not always take hold in her own home state of Texas, or perhaps Lady Bird just understood, and rightly, that sometimes neon is a work of art! …and in Austin, the arts are alive, well and kickin’ up a fuss!
