A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE & MUSIC of PAUL WINGO

Yesterday, the Washington, D.C. area music community gathered at Calvary Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Maryland to remember and celebrate the life and music of jazz guitarist- Paul Wingo. Born in Havre de Grace, Maryland in 1946, Paul’s career spanned his early teen years in Cambridge, Maryland playing with the “VOLTS” through his years with the Army’s premier jazz ensemble, The Army Blues, to his many gigs with national and international jazz artists, including Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis , Steve Allen and Dinah Shore. Paul was a Baltimore jazz institution in his own right, performing every Tuesday night at Bertha’s ( mussels ) Restaurant in Fells Point for 3 decades. ( He even rated a mention in a story by best selling mystery author Laura Lippman ) Paul was known as much for his quiet, gentle  and unassuming personality and as a deeply committed teacher and friend as for his complex and fiery guitar licks. His friends and fellow guitarists and musicians paid their heartfelt goodbyes at this tribute hosted by WPFW-FM host, Tom Cole. A man of peace and profound commitment to his music, Paul will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched with his music and deep sense of love and spirituality. photo afbIMG_7872.jpg photo afbIMG_7880.jpg photo afbIMG_7887.jpg

2012 COVER STORY A YEAR IN MUSICAL PACKAGING

Photobucket
Sometimes I have to admit, I’m a lucky guy. Ever since I was a wee lad, all I ever wanted to do was make pictures, to create images. Now, here I am, an ocassionally cranky, bald headed curmudgeon, the mutant love child of Michael Stipe and the Pillsbury Dough Boy, cranking out CD and album covers for a living. 2012 was a good and productive year, with a wide range of musical styles and diverse personalities to collaborate with, and my hope is that 2013 will be no different! Not to complain, but since I am the Cover King, and hopes are that I pass the target number of 300 CDs in print sometime by mid-year, my New Year’s wish is a few more visually daring clients, a couple of really off the wall bands and projects to put me over the top. Maybe some vinyl? Something really, really out there! It will be 2013 you know. So, at year’s end, I want to thank everyone for their support, and the continued opportunity to create, create, create and remember, don’t forget that Image is Everything. (Thanks to Steve for a allowing me to steal a great line)Photobucket

ARTINGER CUSTOM GUITARS

Photobucket
One of my absolute favorite ongoing assignments is working with master luthier Matt Artinger. Based in scenic Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Matt builds some of the sweetest instruments on the planet, and these guitars are as playable as they are works of art. I usually devote my creative efforts in displaying Matt’s work to the integrity and design of the instruments themselves, but I recently had the opportunity to work with an up and coming young guitarist who is as beautiful as the instruments themselves. Form, function, beauty, talent. All readily apparent in this round of pictures. If you need the ultimate custom guitar, please give Matt a call. If you need a great model & guitarist, let me know & I can put you in touch. If you want imaging services, I am always just a call away!PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

GARY FLOWERS GUITARS

What a stunning bit of the luthier’s art! One of my favorite moments behind the camera is when I get to make another artist’s work come alive in the two dimensional world that I inhabit… and share it with an appreciative audience. Here is a bit of wood and metal from Baltimore guitar builder Gary Flowers that just makes the eyes water from the sheer intensity of the figuring in the wood. A real beauty! Not only that, but it sounds superb! There’s a guitarist out there today who’s experiencing quite a special musical moment. Enjoy!
